129 years after John Froelich invented and built the first gas-powered tractor, a new generation of electric-powered, quiet tractors are showing up on farms in the United States and Canada. As more farmers look to save money and reduce their carbon footprint, converting to an electric tractor also provides a big health and safety benefit: noise reduction.

A Noisy Tradition

A traditional diesel tractor produces about 85 decibels while idling and 100 decibels at full power. According to OSHA, hearing loss can occur at 85 decibels for an extended period of time, and hearing damage can be immediate at 120 decibels. For agriculture workers, prolonged exposure to diesel tractor noise above 85 decibels can cause long-term, permanent hearing damage.

A Safer, Quieter Tractor

An electric tractor motor produces almost no noise. Most of the noise is created by the drivetrain and the front end loader, which is well under 85 decibels; additional noise may vary based on the type of implement being used. According to the Nebraska National Tractor Testing Laboratory, the Solectrac eUtility Electric Tractor is 2000 times quieter than a traditional diesel tractor. And, unlike a diesel tractor that continues to make noise while idling, electric tractors are virtually silent at idle; apart from the low hum of the electronics.

Quiet tractors greatly reduce the potential for hearing loss while increasing a worker’s ability to communicate, ultimately creating a safer work environment. As more consumers convert to electric vehicles, farmers now have the option to make the electric tractor conversion as well; without compromising on power or capability.
